Canoeing on the Asón river

For a refreshing bit of adventure on a hot summer’s day we decided to head for Ampuero, just inland of Laredo in eastern Cantabria.

The stretch of the Asón river from Rasines down to Ampuero the Asón  has all you could ask for – beautifully clear water straight off the mountains of the Alto Asón, tranquil paddling combined with the odd stretch of rapids, a weir to jump, a chance for a swim and beautiful scenery throughout – plus there’s no crowds! There’s only one company, Canoas Asón, offering the trip so there’s never much more than a dozen boats on the water at any one time.

Go in the morning and follow up with a hearty menú del día or choose the afternoon followed by Chocolate and Picatostes -we recommend  Cafe/Bar La Piedra by the church in nearby Limpias whichever you go for!

Practicalities: Canoas Asón http://www.canoason.es have there base in Ampuero, go through the town to the end and turn right at the Hostal Pintas. The office is on the left a little way down. Best to book ahead – phone 00 34 943634225 or 678414135. There are no age limits – in August with little water our 4 year old was absolutely fine, other times of the year it might be more ‘exciting’. Journey takes about two hours but allow three for the whole outing.
