Limpias IS Chocolate y Picatostes

Limpias riverside walk

At the navigable limit of the River Asón in eastern Cantabria Limpias was for centuries an important and wealthy port, exporting wool and minerals from Burgos to the rest of Europe. Since the early 20th century it has fallen into decline yet its former wealth can still be seen here and, in neighbouring Ampuero, in the grand houses. These days it is a quiet backwater, popular with holiday makers for its lovely riverside walk and its proximity both to the beaches and the beautiful, unspoilt valleys of eastern Cantabria.

But ask anyone from Bilbao to Burgos to Santander and that’s not at all what they’ll tell you! Limpias is where you have to go to eat Picatostes (something between egg-bread and churros) con Chocolate (real Spanish drinking chocolate). Next to the church at the upper end of the village are two bars – Bar Hermi and La Piedra – where they serve this local delicacy, and the people really do flock from miles around.
