Protected by the craggy south face of the Sierra Toloño to the north and bounded by the Rio Ebro to the south, the Rioja Alavesa enjoys a priveledged micro-climate for wine growing. Here you will find some of the most prestigious producers and many small boutique wineries as well. Though part of the Denominación de Origen of La Rioja this area actually lies within the province of Alava, southernmost of the Basque Country’s three provinces. There is great walking to be had either amongst the vines, up in the Sierra or just beyond in the Izki nature park.
