Hondarribia

HondarribiaAt the mouth of the Rio Bidasoa which forms the natural border with France at the Bay of Biscay Hondarribia, also know as Fuenterrabia, must be one of the Basque Country’s best kept secrets. Both the walled medieval Old Town and the fisherman’s quarter down towards the harbour are excellently preserved and offer plenty of bars to sample the local pintxos. There is a nice fishing harbour and a sandy beach as well as great coastal walks at the foot of mount Jaizkibel. A little known fact is that Hondarribia was used as the setting for the opening scenes of Papillon, supposedly set in France!
