A sleepy rural idyll in the north west corner of Castilla y León, El Bierzo is like a trip back in time.

The Romans found gold in the hills and created the unique red-rock landscape of Las Médulas whilst the Knights Templar built the fairytale castle at Ponferrada, the region's capital, to protect pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
