Just a nine minute drive to the wonderful surfy beach at Playa de Berria, this attractive three storey terraced house forms part of a quiet and pleasant residential complex. On the edge of the stunning wetlands of the Marismas de Santoña, a protected nature reserve and a sanctuary for birdlife, it is in the pretty village of Escalante with lovely examples of local architecture.

Built eighteen years ago in traditional style with two balconies (one with views of the wetlands) and patios at the front and back, it is very tastefully decorated and furnished and immaculately maintained by its friendly owners. Comfortable and cosy, central heating and a wood burning stove in the relaxing living room, make it a good choice for out of season holidays too.

A very short walk takes you to two bars serving food and in the main part of the village there are more bars and restaurants to whet your appetite. Not far away is the fishing port of Santoña, producer of the best anchovies in Spain and the coast nearby is dotted with lively seaside towns offering all sorts of gastronomical delights. Easy access to the motorway make day trips to Santander and Bilbao more than feasible. All in all, a great base for exploring the wonderful eastern side of Cantabria!

From this, front door opens into compact, modern kitchen. Passage from this to bathroom and large open plan living room with door onto enclosed, south-facing, paved back patio with garden table and chairs.

From the living room, a pine staircase goes up to the first floor and landing. Off this, second bathroom and two double bedrooms, both with balconies and one with a view of the wetlands.

A further flight of stairs goes up from the landing to the attic room with two skylights and two single beds and a double bed.

The pretty village of Escalante with some fine examples of traditional local architecture, sits on the edge of the stunning wetlands of Las Marismas de Santoña, a protected nature reserve and a sanctuary for birdlife, in Eastern Cantabria.

It has several bars and restaurants, a supermarket and a chemist's and a very good baker's and nearby in the fishing port of Santoña where you can sample the best anchovies in Spain, you have more facilities, including a local market.

The wonderful surfy beach at Playa de Berria is just six kilometres away and can be reached by a cycle path as well as by car. A little further, lively seaside towns and more superb beaches dot the coastline.

An area rich in churches and ancient palaces, it has seen recent development, but farming and fishing are its mainstays and vineyards are now making an appearance too!

Both Santander and Bilbao are within easy reach and the stunning Valley of the Asón with its impressive prehistoric caves couldn't be bettered for inland exploration.

  • Golf at Seve Ballesteros' course in nearby Pedrena.
  • Feast on fish and seafood at numerous restaurants in the area. Book a table at the fantastic three star Michelin restaurant Cenador de Amos at Villaverde de Pontones or at one star Bicicleta in Hoznayo or at one star La Solana in Ampuero.
  • Eat the best anchovies in the world at nearby Santoña where you can take a trip across the bay to Laredo.
  • Visit the local Bodega Vidular and Bodega Lancina and sample their excellent white wines.
  • Visit Cabárceno - excellent wildlife park, an easy trip.
  • Visit Santander - there is a regular ferry service from Somo.
  • Visit the Guggenheim museum and Bilbao in less than an hour.

Getting There

Santander and the east of Cantabria region has excellent access by air and sea:

Stansted to Bilbao with Easyjet or Santander with Ryanair;
Gatwick to Bilbao or Oviedo with Vueling (BA).
Manchester to Bilbao with Easyjet;
Bristol to Bilbao with Easyjet;
Edinburgh to Santander with Ryanair or Bilbao with Easyjet;
Dublin to Santander with Ryanair or Bilbao with Aer Lingus.

Ferries: Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbao – 5 sailings weekly.

If travelling by air we recommend renting a hire car to make the most out of your visit to the area. If you prefer to use public transport please consult our expert staff for advice on which properties are more suitable.
