La Cavada

The sizeable village of La Cavada, on the Rio Miera, in the municipality of Riotuerto, twenty kilometres south east of Santander, has been important since 1622 when the Royal Artillery Foundry was established there. Cannons were produced for ships and fortresses throughout Spain and the Spanish Empire.

What remains now is the imposing archway of Carlos111 and a fine cannon, but also a very interesting museum, explaining the history of the factory, the best in C17th Europe, and how a significant part of the village is the result of the transformation of factory buildings into private houses.

Along with nearby Lierganes, with its C16th bridge, interesting churches and palaces, the geological formation of the "Tetas de Lierganes" and the legend of "El Hombre Pez", this beautiful area, with lush vegetation has much to explore.

La Cavada has most facilities including some quirky bars, a couple of restaurants, a good baker's and small shops and a supermarket and a municipal swimming pool. Not far away at Hoznayo, is the very good restaurant, La Bicicleta, great for a special occasion.

The lovely beaches at Somo, Langre and Loredo can be reached in less than half an hour and excursions into the spectacular valleys of Soba and Ason are on your doorstep.

Bilbao and the Guggenheim are an hour's drive.
