Villanueva de Villaescusa

Villanueva is a sizeable village (600 inhabitants) in lush countryside in the municipality of Villaescusa, fifteen kilometres south of Santander, and just a few minutes' drive to the fantastic wildlife park of Cabarceno with its amazing karst landscape.

It has a supermarket, a bank, a chemist's, a health clinic, a hairdresser's, a veterinary surgery and a couple of bars and restaurants. There is also a municipal swimming pool and sports' centre and access to the Via Verde route, a cycle/walking path that takes you almost to Santander in one direction and up into the hills in the other.

Nearest beaches are at eighteen kilometres - either the elegant city beaches of El Sardinero and La Magdalena in Santander or the more natural beaches of Liencres and Somo.

Inland, and not far away are the superb prehistoric caves at Puente Viesgo (there is also a spa here) and the fascinating area of the Valle del Pas with its unique history.

Local Activities

  • Take the kids to the excellent Cabarceno Wildlife Park just down the road.
  • Cycle or walk the Via Verde de Pas route which you can join in the village and takes you almost to Astillero near Santander or to Ontaneda in the other direction.
