El Nido, Cantabria and Asturias

Barago | Ref: POT20 | Bedrooms: 2 | Sleeps: 4

Traditional country cottage in the Picos mountains.

El Nido is a charmingly rustic, single storey, south facing, stone cottage set in its large enclosed grounds with wonderful views of the fields and mountains beyond. A perfect place to relax and unwind and for children to play safely!

In a delightful little corner with other houses around, in the lovely traditional farming village of Barago, which has amazing dramatic peaks as a backdrop and spectacular views of the Picos de Europa in the forefront.

Carefully and tastefully renovated with high beamed ceilings, and traditional touches, though fairly simple, it is quite roomy and provides most modern comforts.

You are spoilt for walking and cycling routes directly from the doorstep and though the village has no facilities except for the daily bread van, the municipality's "capital", La Vega de Liebana at four kilometres has three bars and restaurants, a shop, a bank and chemist's and a municipal swimming pool.

A little further, in the opposite direction, up a very winding road, are the picturesque villages of Cucayo and Dobres with a couple of bars and restaurants too and great opportunities for hiking.

Barago

The small farming village of Barago nestles comfortably in a beautiful valley backed by dramatic peaks and with spectacular views of the Picos de Europa. Lying between these and the Montana Palentina, an area rich in oak and beech forests with their amazing flora and fauna, it offers excellent opportunities for walking and cycling.

Though it has no facilities, a bread van visits daily and at four kilometres is La Vega de Liebana, the "capital" of the area with three bars/restaurants, a shop, a bank, a chemist's and a Tourist Office and a municipal swimming pool.

Six kilometres above the village, up a vertiginous road and two tunnels, lie the stunningly picturesque villages of Cucayo and Dobres, with the peaks of Lezna and Bistruey towering above. There are two bars/restaurants here too.
