A living museum set in sumptuous gardens by the River Saja

For those looking for something special, this is a beautiful house in a beautiful location.

A lovingly converted barn and mill, it stands in delightful, carefully maintained, extensive enclosed grounds, set in the nature reserve of Reserva de Saja with the River Saja running by, offering trout fishing (with a license) and swimming a little further upstream.

With a cobbled courtyard with a covered porch and a terrace with lovely views to the ruins of the old mill and hills and a BBQ area, sitting and dining out here are particularly special.

Great care has been put into rebuilding, furnishing and equipping this property, with the best local materials and antiques, to make a very comfortable and charming home. Many of the ceilings are beamed, floors are tiled or of polished oak. Interesting paintings, wall hangings and ornaments create a lived in feel. Central heating and electric blankets make it an excellent choice for an out-of-season holiday.

A cottage adjoins the main house, but with a separate entrance. The owners live here, never intrusive, but, on hand to share their knowledge of the area and help out if needed.
Should you require extra cleaning or a meal to be cooked for you, this can be arranged locally.

This makes a great base for exploring this very beautiful part of Cantabria with gently rolling hills, rising to the sierra behind, much of it wooded, and the villages have fine examples of regional architecture in their mix of palacios and farmhouses.

There is good walking and cycling in the locality and the local hotel (a five minute walk) has a spa, indoor pool and outdoor pool open to the public. The market town of Cabezon de la Sal is a fifteen minute drive and the coast with its beautiful beaches forty minutes.

Front gate opens from lane into the drive, garden and a cobblestone courtyard with covered porch area with garden furniture.

Front door from the courtyard into a small hall and from this a further door into a high ceilinged, spacious living room with sitting and dining areas. French doors from this into the garden.

Another door leads onto a covered terrace with garden furniture and a lovely view onto hills, the old well and the ruins of the mill with the sound of the river running by. Door from this to the garden.

Renedo de Cabuerniga

Renedo de Cabuerniga, in the beauiful Saja valley south of Cabezón, with the River Saja running by, is a handsome village with some fine examples of regional architecture. It has no shop, but there are three restaurants offering local specialities and a hotel with a spa, indoor pool and outdoor pool, open to the public.
The nearest small supermarket, butcher's , bank and chemist's are three kilometres at Valle.

It is one of the best places to experience the customs & traditions of rural Cantabria whilst enjoying the spectacular landscape, flora and fauna.

Within a short drive you may visit several towns of declared historical or artistic interest such as Barcena Mayor or Carmona, whilst the coast is never far away. The lovely market town of Cabezon de la Sal is just a fifteen minute drive too.

  • Visit the interesting coastal towns of Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera.
  • Have a day out at historic Santillana del Mar - visit the replica of the Altamira caves there and the zoo.
  • Take a day trip to the magnificent Los Picos de Europa.
  • Take the narrow gauge FEVE train from Cabezon de la Sal to the lively city of Santander.
  • Don't miss the lively Saturday market day at Cabezón de la Sal.
  • Enjoy excellent local gastronomy at the three restaurants in the village and at other family run restaurants nearby.

Stansted to Bilbao with Easyjet or Santander with Ryanair;
Gatwick to Bilbao or Oviedo with Vueling (BA).
Manchester to Bilbao with Easyjet;
Bristol to Bilbao with Easyjet;
Edinburgh to Santander with Ryanair or Bilbao with Easyjet;
Dublin to Santander with Ryanair or Bilbao with Aer Lingus.

Ferries: Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbao – 7 sailings weekly.
