The tailor's house is quite unique and something of a living museum with artefacts from the tailor's business run by the present owner's family in times gone by. Here you'll feel that you've travelled, not only to a different country, but also to another time – though the sumptuous superior rooms, recently renovated just next door, offer all the creature comforts.

The hotel fits snugly with its setting, the nicely preserved medieval village of Santa Pau, just south of the Garrotxa Volcanic Park, and has lovely gardens, a small swimming pool and terraces to take in the views or soak in the shade of a summer's afternoon.

The restaurant is perhaps the star here, spurning modernity and keeping the same yesteryears' style as the rest of the hotel, it offers the local 'Cuina Volcanica', strictly based on local ingredients grown or reared in the volcanic soil, and is frequented by Catalonia's great and good – presidents, political and sporting alike.

Santa Pau, Spanish Pyrenees and Catalunya

Just south of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Nature Park, the medieval fortified village of Santa Pau stands out as the place from which to visit this truly unique region. With over 40 volcanic cones and 20 lava flows, La Garrotxa is the largest volcanic zone on the Iberian Peninsula and offers a landscape completely different from the nearby Pyrenees. The proximity of the Mediterranean and the lower altitudes here make themselves felt in a softer climate which in turn makes the area ideal for walkers all year round. The Mediterranean influence is also to be noted in the local gastronomy but with a twist – here you really must sample the ‘Cuina Volcanica’ the gastronomic movement based on the best local ingredients, grown or reared on volcanic soil.
