La Guingueta D'Aneu, Spanish Pyrenees and Catalunya

High in the Catalan Pyrenees, at the upper end of the county of Pallars Sobira, the Val d’Aneu cut by the river Noguera Pallaresa offers a fantastic base for walkers and nature lovers alike. There are regular bus services (cars aren’t allowed) from the valley into the nearby National Park of Sant Maurici y Aigüestortes but you may be content to stay put in this beautiful spot.
The region has an exceptionally rich flora and fauna with the transition from Mediterranean to Alpine climate and here you’ll find eagles and vultures, ptarmigan and capercaillie, woodpeckers and all kinds of migratory birds; there are wild boar, chamois and roe and fallow deer, and plenty of trout in the pure waters of the river.
As a gateway to France the valley has been of great strategic importance in previous centuries and this can be seen in the abandoned fortifications and deserted villages and, as in much of northern Catalunya, there is a fine selection of Romanesque architecture to visit.
