Set in the southern hills of the Urdaibai Nature Park this fine example of a Vizcayan farmhouse or 'caserio' is well situated to explore the very best of the Basque Country whilst providing a haven to return to at the end of the day.

Recently restored and decorated to a high standard by the owners it has a modern feel whilst at the same time retaining the essence of the historic building, making the most of the natural materials of the original house.

The emphasis here is on tranquility emphasised in the clean lines, white linen and the absence of TV and other electronics in the lounges.

Muxika, North Spain

More of a collection of hamlets than a village, Muxika (or Mugica) forms the southernmost part of the Urdaibai Nature Reserve, a region of outstanding natural beauty and diversity which has achieved the status of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Just to the north is the historic town of Gernika, made famous by Picasso's painting depicting its bombardment by Franco's allies in the civil war. Beyond that, just 20 minutes' drive, lies the idylic estuary of the Rio Oka, lined with sandy beaches, which spills out into the Bay of Biscay at Mundaka, home to the World Surfing Championships on several occasions.

Bilbao is just half an hour's drive away, San Sebastian an hour and the busy fishing villages of Lekeitio, Bermeo and near-vertical Elantxobe are within easy reach.

  • Nature watching in the Biosphere reserve.
  • Visit Bilbao, San Sebastian and Gernika
  • Explore the Vizcayan coast and fishing villages
  • Cycling or walking – in the reserve or the Duranguesado mountains nearby
  • Kayaking in the Estuary
  • Visit the enchanted forest and the caves of Santimamine
