San Mamede

Up the hill (3km) from the beach at Carnota the village of San Mamede offers some of the best views over one of Spain's most beautiful beaches. A peaceful spot with a stream and a watermill here you really get the feeling of being in the mountains whilst having the beach close at hand. Down the hill by the church there is a bar /shop and bread vans and other mobile vans come to the village.

All amenities can be found in Carnota (four kilometres) where there is a market on Wednesdays. There are also three very good fish and seafood restaurants within a short drive at nearby Caldebarcos.

Local Activities

  • Beautiful beaches - Playa de Carnota an easy walk.
  • Walking and cycling in the hills behind the village.
  • Visit the horreo (grainstore) at Carnota - longest in the world.
  • Explore the interesting old towns of Muros and Noia.
  • Visit Cabo Finisterra and its lighthouse "the end of the world" - the western most point of continental Europe.
  • Go to Ezarķ and Monte Pindo "the Celtic Olympus" with huge granite boulders with mysterious engravings and ruins of ancient shrines and dramatic waterfalls.
  • Visit A Coruņa and Santiago de Compostela.
