Salarzón

Right up in the beautiful hills of the Liébana, the picturesque village of Salarzon is notable for its neoclassical church (one of the few such buildings in the region) and the palacio of its builders, the Counts of Cortina – and for breathtaking views of the high Picos.

It is a lovely spot for walkers and nature lovers, and while it feels remote is only 9km from Potes, and a little over an hour to the coast. Tama (7km) has a bar/restaurant and there is a bakery, a bar/shop and supermarket at Ojedo on the way to Potes. A bread van comes to the village.

Local Activities

  • Walking locally and to other villages beyond and to Potes (signposted).
  • Walk the Ruta de Cares from Posada de Valdeon.
  • Birdwatching. From the balcony alone you will be amazed by the variety of species.
  • Horse-riding in nearby Vinon.
  • Fishing in the River Deva (but with a licence).
  • Many outdoor activity companies in Potes.
  • Explore the interesting old town of Potes.
  • Visit the fascinating churches in Piasca and Santa Maria de Lebana and the monastery of Santo Toribio.
  • Take the cable car up to the heights at Fuente De.
  • Sample the gastronomy of the region at many family run restaurants - cocido lebaniego, the local dish, not to be missed!
  • Take a day trip by the San Glorio pass to the city of Leon with its amazing cathedral.

"Enlightening Odyssey In Northern Spain
Two centre, DIY fly drive, of Northern Spain using Casa Cantabricas to source our accommodation..... I have never visited the north west coast of Spain and was persuaded too. What a revelation. Lush, verdant, mountainous and 'alp' like. Simply stunning and a warm, welcoming populace too. Excellent roads and so lightly used. We booked two properties, both fairly remote but in total contrast to each other. One being suited strictly to two while the other slept six with ease. In each case the properties were exactly as described. We will certainly return to the region." (Client 2018)
