El Bierzo - a special secret

El Bierzo, a very special, yet little known region, in the west of the province of León with Ponferrada and its magnificent Castle of the Templars as its capital and historic Villafranca del Bierzo, at one time the capital of Galicia, still standing firmly, is steeped in history having attracted numerous civilizations and pilgrims over the centuries. The Romans came here to dig for gold and the present day inhabitants still mine iron and cobalt. Blessed with a micro climate and rich soil watered by streams and rivers it is one of Spain's most important fruit growing areas and Mencia wine produced from its vineyards can rival a good Rioja.
