Euskadi – Elosua and Udana via Oñati and Bergara

A circular route taking in the historic towns of Bergara where Tungsten was first isolated and Oñati with its beautiful ancient university. The first climb to Elosua is quite a stiff 9km but there is a small cafe bar at the top with great views (open summer months and weekends) and it has its reward in a hair-raising decent to Bergara.

It’s worth a look around Bergara if you have time but perhaps Oñati is the more picturesque of the towns en route should you only have time for one stop.

From Oñati it’s up and over the pass of Udana which, thankfully, is quite a bit easier on the legs and has the most fantastic views of Aitzgorri (the highest mountain in Euskadi) as well as Udalaitz – take a break and stop at the lovely view point about half way up.
