As the average temperature drops to a comfortable 20ºC, and along with it the humidity, this is for many people the best time of year to enjoy the excellent walking and scenery on offer in all of our regions. Add to this the prospect of harvest fresh produce, beaches and other attractions free from the summer’s crowds, and we’re sure you’ll find it hard to resist.
Although the whole northern region of “Green Spain” is beautiful at this time of the year, alive with a blaze of autumn colour, particular highlights include the dramatic gorges of Picos de Europa in Asturias and Cantabria. This is the time for birdwatchers to see the hoards of migratory birds which pass through on their way to Africa and the South. The wine growing region of the Rioja Alavesa undergoes a transformation from green to the most vibrant tones of red and bursts into life as the whole area prepares for the harvest.
For those seeking a more adrenalin-fuelled holiday, a full range of mountain activities is available through the autumn and into the winter. However, those looking to simply relax and enjoy the scenery will find no end of deserted beaches and coastal walks.
It's also a great time for a touring holiday, no queues or bustle and with travel and accommodation at low season prices it won't break the bank! See our Caminos section for more details.
