Etxalar

Just over the border from France and not far from the Bay of Biscay the village of Etxalar sits among the lovely green mountains of northern Navarra, where the Pyrenees come down to meet the sea. Well placed for exploring Navarra and the French and Spanish Basque country this is the perfect base to combine a walking holiday with days at the beach, and visits to historic towns nearby.
The village itself, famed for its traditional style of pigeon hunting in the autumn, is beautifully preserved in the style particular to the valleys of the Baztan and Bidasoa and has two good bar / restaurants, an open air swimming pool and a large fronton (open air pelota court, doubles as a playground on rainy days).

Local Activities

  • Walking straight from the town, nearby Palomeras, Señorio de Bertiz nature park, Larrun or the many mountains within easy reach.
  • Visit the Basque coast & its lovely beaches; on the Spanish side Hondarribia & San Sebastian, French side Hendaye, St Jean de Luz & Biarritz
  • Take the 'petit train' to Larrun (900m) and enjoy fantastic views over the Bay of Biscay
  • Explore the pretty local villages of Lesaka & Bera de Bidasoa, Elizondo, Sare, Ascain, Espelette
  • Visit the valley of Baztan & Señorio de Bertiz nature park.
  • Have a day out in Pamplona or San Sebastian; shopping, culture & great tapas!
  • Cycle or walk the local 'Via Verde', a disused railway, now converted into a cycleway from Endarlatza to Donestebe.
