With the Cordillera Cantabrica forming the boundary between the Atlantic maritime climate to the north and the Mediteranean to the south what defines the region is its diversity. The high mountains are home to large birds of prey as well as grouse and even bears, whilst the wetlands of the coast provide the ideal stop-off for migratory birds en-route to Africa. There are some forty protected nature parks ranging from the Islas Atlanticas off the Galician coast to the desert of Las Bardenas in southern Navarra.
