Ballota,
Asturias
![]()
On the rugged coastline west of Gijón, Ballota is a peaceful cliff top village midway between the charming old fishing ports of Luarca and Cudillero (each about 20 minutes’ drive). About a four-hour drive from Santander but a mere half-hour from Asturias airport, it is well located for exploring east and west along the coast, for going south into the Pico de Europa, and for visiting the historic town of Oviedo or the bustling port of Gijón. Its beach, accessible on foot or by four-wheel drive vehicle only, is used mainly by the locals; other lovely beaches are within easy reach. Good walks are to be had, and both sea and trout fishing in season. The village has a small shop, a bakery and a very good restaurant/bar; nearby Soto de Luina has a supermarket, and there are numerous restaurants within easy reach.
